Discuss what you think is necessary to create an "epic tale" like American Born Chinese. What kinds of characters, struggles, settings, etc? Which of these elements in ABC do you find especially effective?
What is necessary to create an "Epic Tale" is a hero that has struggles, super-human ability, and has affected a large group of people. The character has to be brave and have leadership skills. The elements in ABC, I find effective are the struggles of being a minority or wanting to be human, and also overcoming those obstacles and be their true self.
Some things that I think are necessary in creating an “epic tale” is a struggle that a character has to go through. The setting could be that of a fairy tale or the real world to make it seem more interesting. In ABC I think that the elements that I find most effective are the struggles that the main characters had to go through. For example, The Monkey King was not happy with being a Monkey. Jin Wang had to deal with being in a new country and fitting in.

Kenya, i think you made a good point about "struggles" because if you never had any obstacles in your way than it would be much easier than anyone who did have a chance, thus anyone can do it.
In order for someone to write an epic tale, they have to relate it to an hero. The tale should have a very powerful conflict,it should beable to be compared to real. Even through it has something to do with real life the setting should be a fairy tale. In ABC,there was very similiar problems.

I think that in order to have an epic tale, you have to have a hero of some sort that struggles for some time and then overcomes his/her struggle. I think that the character has to first show up weak like in ABC, and then suprise you by overcomming this struggle. there should also be a villian which would be the struggle. The elements that I think are effective in ABC are that the author has a hero that people would not usually call a hero. He has a struggle within himself and he goes through some bad times. in the end we see that he conquers his inside struggle and overcomes it.
Well apparently you have to have a main conclusion. Your conclusion is everything. It tells what the story is about and what happens. Then when you find out what your story want to be about then you have to make sertain characteristics. Maybe funny, serius, happy, etc. Then you need a raisin action (climax). then you end the story with a twist that makes the reader say "wow i never thought it would end like this!"
An epic tale is something that can be complicated, but at the same time not complicated. You need many different things to create one, but to start off I would like to say what I think an epic tale is. to me an epic tale is an adventure, something that captivates a ready for a long period of time with several different climaxes along the way to the end. But if an epic tale is to hld a reader then it must start off with several good plots. The main type of characters would be a group of people that travel alongside the protagonist along with one antagonist. The different struggles come towards the protagonist mainly, and they will mainly be caused by the antagonist in most cases. A setting for an epic tale could be practically anywhere, it could start on one part of the world and end on the next because remember, this si all to captivate the reader. I find the fact that it is 3 different stories helps to keep the reader's attention rather than just one short story.
Anansi's Fishing Expedition is a story from Sub Saharan Africa, where Anansi (the spider) tricks people into doing things he wants. So what happened was that Anansi asked a fellow person in town to start selling fish. He found one person who finally out smarted him. The person said I will do the work, while you take the pain. But Anansi said that he wante to do that so the man got rich and Anansi learned his leson.
To created an epic tale" you need good charecters a good plot and conflict. You would need unique charecter and what i mean by that is make a character like no over characters. This make an new fresh stroy that no one every heaar of. So you can say i was the first one to do something like this and now you whould have people following in your footstep. So i say to make agood graphic novel is to be new.
Well 'csmith' what i mean is that you need a main setting, conclusion, character, plot, etc. Basically you just have to have a spice. like if you were baking a cake your main ingredients will be eggs, milk, etc. Everything that makes a cake a cake! lol

I agree with what 'cece' said about "main characters". A graphic novel or story would not be anything without a main character.
